Chapter 45
Introduction
In order to help people to reach the state of pure tranquility and abandon reckless behaviors (qīng jìng wú wéi清静无为), this chapter discusses the behavioral styles of the people who have attained Dao through dialectical perspectives. By reaching the state of pure tranquility and without reckless behavior, one will act as “the most perfect”, “the most full”, “the most straight”, and with “the greatest skill” and “the greatest eloquence”. Based on that, one will become a model for all the people and cause the world to become ordered and stable. Text
What is most perfect seems to have something missing;
But its usefulness cannot be exhausted.
What is most full seems to be empty;
But its usefulness cannot be infinite.
The most straight seems to be crooked.
The greatest skill seems to be clumsy.
The greatest eloquence seems like fumbling for words.
Strenuous activity overcomes the cold.
Tranquility of mind overcomes the heat.
Being pure and tranquil, one can become a model for all the people and cause the world to become ordered and stable.
